From my limited knowledge on how insecticides work, all types have the ability to eventually reduce effect. Commonly, pet owners will switch brands every few years for this exact reason.

What I do know for absolute fact is that one can kill fleas in their home (and the often forgotten vehicle!)inexpensively with a huge [...] bag of Diatamaceous Earth found at any old pool supply store! Also, this bag will last you for years if stored in a dry place! It works by puncturing the protective "skin" of the insect, thereby "allowing" it to dehydrate to death! This is a death we could wish on an entity such as Hitler, yes? Parasites of all kinds too!

I have applied the powder (ground up seashells, if I understand correctly!) directly to my dog, but I would not recommend this as we know not what it would do to their digestive systems, etc. Same said, although more heartily, for our feline friends who are much more suseptable to urinary and digestive problems AND clean themselves much more rigorously!

The BEST way to use this powder is to shake it all over the floor, animals bedding, between your mattress pad and sheet, all over the car floor and seats... you get the idea. Try to keep your hand, flour sifter, whatever you're using close to the floor - electronic and dust do not mix! I have been known to leave the stuff down for a couple of weeks if I have a real infestation, which has happened to me twice in 3 decades. I am sure that leaving it down for that long just last July 2010 was overkill, and I'm equally sure that it really had to do with laziness! I had also been too lazy to go get the Advantage I had run out of for all my animals...

Enter "diatomaceous earth for fleas" in a Google search for more info! -- Advantage still works, perhaps supplement w/ Diatamaceous Earth!

I usually go to Advantage when the flea season starts (and it always worked good), but Costco had Frontline and I tried that this time (I figured they were all pretty much the same). Boy what a MISTAKE!!!! My flea population EXPLODED on Frontline!!! I waited for the month (literally picking at least 30 fleas off each of my dogs every night by hand to try and help), and then went back to my Advantage. The day after applying Advantage, I found 1 flea on my dog and it was almost dead, it just fell off her (on Frontline, I went from having about 15 fleas fall off my dogs while bathing them before the application, to almost 100 while they were on it, so they had A LOT of fleas when I applied Advantage). In 1 day, this product did what the people at Frontline told me would take up to 6 months for their product to do!! Advantage SAVED my animals and house from being COMPLETELY infested with fleas (gross). This stuff is amazing, and I will always use Advantage!!! -- Will never go without this product!!!
